Many people have asked me how I write. I’m always a little confused when someone asks such a broad question because writing, to me, is like breathing; I’ve always done it, and naturally so. But the question is a relevant one, especially when asked by someone who does not know me and has never read my work. So now I’m thinking, If someone is going to read one of my children’s books to their child, or invest their time in reading one of my novels, they certainly have a right to know what makes me tick as an author. So in a nutshell, before I start tapping away on my keyboard, I try to do one thing to the very best of my ability—listen. Whether it is a children’s story or an adult novel, before I begin to write I ask Jesus to make me one of the best secretaries He has ever had.
